Level 2 (Ni)

Ni

Level 2 is about reaps and links. The judoka performs the large and small inner reaps and the large outer reap, chains o-uchi-gari into ko-uchi-gari, and transitions from the large outer reap into three different holds.

What you'll learn

  • Perform O-uchi-gari, Ko-uchi-gari and O-soto-gari.
  • Combine O-uchi-gari into Ko-uchi-gari.
  • Transition from O-soto-gari into three holds.

Techniques in this level

  • Mae-ukemi

    Front breakfall

    Breakfalls

Catch a forward fall on the forearms, keeping the face and knees off the mat.

  • Mae-mawari-ukemi

    Forward rolling breakfall

    Breakfalls

Roll diagonally across the back and come up to your feet — a smooth roll, never a flop.

  • O-uchi-gari

    Large inner reap

    Throws

Reap Uke's inner leg from the inside, driving them backward. Practised static, then with a push-pull.

  • Ko-uchi-gari

    Small inner reap

    Throws

A small inside clip to Uke's near foot that breaks balance to the rear — pairs naturally with o-uchi-gari.

  • O-soto-gari

    Large outer reap

    Throws

Break Uke back over a reaped supporting leg. Learned by lifting and rocking the leg first, then with a full step-in.

  • Yoko-shiho-gatame

    Side four-corner hold

    Holds

Control Uke from the side, pinning across the chest and hips.

  • Tate-shiho-gatame

    Straight four-corner hold

    Holds

Sit astride Uke and control the upper body from on top.

  • Kata-gatame

    Shoulder hold

    Holds

Trap Uke's arm against your neck and pin from the side. (The PDF lists this as 'Kata-shiho-gatame'; the shoulder hold is Kata-gatame.)
